Hypertension Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) Natural ACTH is a straight-chain polypeptide consisting of 39 amino acids with a molecular weight of 4500-4600 Daltons. From the N-terminus, the amino acid residues 1-24 and 34-39 of ACTH derived from different species have the same sequence. The first 24 amino acid residues are related to activity, and the last 15 amino acid residues are related to species immunity. Naturally produced ACTH is mainly secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, and its precursor is opioid-promelanocortin (POMC). Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) reaches the pituitary, promotes the synthesis and release of POMC, and is then cleaved into ACTH and other related polypeptides. The circadian rhythm of ACTH secretion is the basis of the circadian rhythm of corticosteroids, both of which are jointly affected by the circadian rhythm of CRH. The basal value of human ACTH is higher in the morning than in the evening, lowest at midnight and highest in the morning. Clinically, the detection of plasma ACTH is used to assist in the diagnosis of Cushing's disease, hypopituitarism with ACTH deficiency, and ectopic ACTH syndrome, etc.
